The original Ben Brierley statue at Queens Park, Rochdale Road, Manchester

The original Ben Brierley statue at Queens Park was erected in Brierley's honour soon after his death. It was vandalised some time in the 1990's and the top section was taken to storage to Heaton Park boathouse. In the mid 90's the boathouse was destroyed in an arson attack which left the statue badly damaged. Today only the plinth remains. The plinth was used to assess the scale of the original statue, which together with the plaster cast bust at Failsworth Library helped the artist to scale the new statue.

Making the new Ben Brierley Statue, with Artist Denise Dutton

The statue, which is cast in bronze, followed a time consuming process which involved the artist, Denise Dutton creating a mould using clay, which is then shaped. The clay is then wrapped in latex to create a mould where the bronze can be cast into.

The whole process takes time, patience and a lot of skill.

Presenting the new Ben Brierley Statue to the people of Failsworth

The statue was only placed less than 24 hours before the official opening, and the cement (shown above) was still being poured the day before.

Thankfully it all turned out OK and as the crowds gathered Councillor Jim McMahon and John Crompton, Chairman of the Failsworth Historical Society presented the statue to the people of Failsworth - and gave a bouquet of flowers to Denise to thank her for such an excellent job!

The presentation was a joint celebration for the statue and for the £400,000 makeover of Failsworth Pole Gardens.
