Congestion Charging:
M60 an unfair option!
30/10/08 ................................................................................................................................. |

As the referendum on the £3 Billion transport plan draws near, Oldham Labour Group have submitted proposals to scrap the congestion charge for local journeys. Under the original proposals drivers would have been charged to cross the M60 into Failsworth. Under plans put forward by Labour those simply crossing the M60 for local journeys would not be charged. The impact of the proposal would mean that unless you then drove on to the inner ring (currently Queens Road) you would not be charged a penny. Unfortunately at the October council meeting neither the Conservative or Lib Dem members supported the motion, which has meant a stand off prior to the referendum due on 12th December.Labour Group Leader Councillor Jim McMahon said “We need the investment in public transport without a doubt, and to pay for this the government insist that congestion charging forms part of the bid. That said there must still be debate about using the M60 and the impact it has on local people going about their day to day business. Unless this is addressed I fear the referendum will lead to a No vote.”
