Work is
well underway on the renovation of the Ena Hughes
Centre on Oldham Road. In partnership with Age
Concern the former centre for people with learning
difficulties is being transformed into a centre for
older people complete with community cafe serving
hot meals which the general public can use.
Councillor Barbara Dawson told Red Rose “this is an
excellent facility which local people can enjoy and
get the support they need to live an independent
life”.

Rochdale Canal Maintenance

After years of battling over the poor
maintenance of the Rochdale Canal through
Failsworth and Chadderton, the Council have
agreed with British Waterways to contribute
to the costs of maintaining the towpaths.
This comes with strict conditions attached
to ensure members of the public can enjoy
the canal network free from litter and
graffiti. Councillor Aileen Bell told Red
Rose “we have been fighting for years to get
this problem addressed, now at long last we
might see some improvement in the condition
of the canal towpaths which make it more
usable for local people”. |

Failsworth East Environment Programme

Failsworth East is to
benefit from a pilot environmental greening project.
The scheme will see 4 community gardens created,
public space improved and areas like Willow Park
Pond (shown above) improved to create bio-diversity
and nature areas.
Councillor Jim McMahon told Red Rose “A small amount
of money can make a huge difference to our
environment. As an example Willow Park pond requires
a clean up and restocking with fish which along with
planting will create a wonderful space for local
people to enjoy. It is great we now we have to the
money to get these projects off the ground”.

Failsworth School Coming on

Failsworth’s state of the art school is on target
to open in February. The £35millon building is the
first brand new secondary school to be built in the
borough for many years.
The new single site sports college on Brierley
Avenue will be home to 1500 students and will be one
of the best equipped and most up to date schools in
the country.
Chair of Governors at Failsworth, Councillor John
Johnson told Red Rose “I’ve inspected the site on
several occasions and I am really excited about the
superb facilities for Failsworth students. This will
be a splendid asset for our community for years to
come”.
Councillor Barbara Dawson is a long serving school
governor. She said “ The new school’s dining
arrangements will be top class with plenty of space
for all students at breaks and lunch time. This
means that no students will be allowed off the at
site at these times”.
Councillors Dawson and Johnson added that they were
delighted with this years exams results. “Once again
we have seen an improvement on the previous year’s
results. When you consider the disruption caused by
the building work this is a real testament to the
hard work and commitment of all the staff and
students”. |
