District Centre: Tesco Latest

Officials at OPP (Oldham Property Partnership) have announced that contractors are due to restart on site mid September with an expected completion date for the Tesco superstore scheduled for mid April 07.

There are still issues to resolve with access off Ashton Road West which are to be agreed between the Health Centre and OPP.

There are also outstanding issues with a nearby business which, it is hoped, will be resolved soon.

Councillor Peter Dean said "after a lot of false starts Failsworth needs this development to begin as promised, we will continue to add pressure and keep people updated".

Project to Recreate Authors for New Generation

Above: Jim McMahon with statue of Failsworth born author Ben Brierley
A local councillor is embarking on a project to recreate famous local authors for a new generation.

Jim McMahon hopes to publish the works of Sim Schofield and Ben Brierley as e-books, which are downloadable PDF files which people can read almost anywhere.

All the books, such as Short Stories About Failsworth Folk are out of copyright, but rare and difficult to find. The aim is to bring alive these authors by making obtaining a copy easy - and most of all FREE through the Failsworth.info website!

Jim said "bringing the Ben Brierley statue to Failsworth has really brought him back to life. Sometime after the unveiling the statue, a young girl, no older than eight asked me 'did you invent Ben Brierley'. Whilst it was amusing, the funny things kids say, it did make me think, had it not for

the statue she wouldn't have known who Ben Brierley was, it was quite impressive".

The first book to be published online will be Short Stories about Failsworth Folk by Sim Schofield which gives a humorous insight in to Failsworth Life around 1905.

Jim Blasts Plant Thieves

Above: Jim McMahon at Ashton Road East, before the plants were stolen by yobs.

Local Councillor and community activist Jim McMahon today blasted thieves who ransacked the planters on Ashton Road East.

The planters, now 2 years old, were paid for by local businesses and through money raised at the annual Failsworth Carnival.

Jim said "this is not stealing from the council or some huge organisation - these were paid for by the Failsworth Carnival through kind donations from the people of Failsworth. This is stealing from the people of Failsworth, plain and simple".

The thefts have been ongoing for some months with the most recent just yesterday when two palms were stolen and a trail of soil leading down Hedges Street towards Roman Road.

Have your say on Community Councils

Above; The Failsworth Crest - Councillors and Residents in Failsworth together deciding on services that affect the people of Failsworth.

Residents are being given the chance to have their say on plans to replace Area Committees with 'Community Councils' for each ward.

The Council believes that local people have a right to receive high quality services and that they also have responsibilities to play their role as good citizens.

The Council therefore wishes to consult with local people about how it can increase the opportunity for local people to inform and influence how a range of Council services  can be delivered in a way that better meets the different geographic circumstances across the Borough.

The Council also wishes to encourage greater debate amongst local people about local issues of concern by providing public meetings that focus on smaller geographic areas than the current 6 Area Committee meetings.

We believe that the people who know best about their area are the people who live there and that they should decide on their own priorities for council service delivery.

The Community Councils would be made up of Councillors, representatives from community groups, churches and voluntary organisations.

The services that could be influenced by the Community Council would include:

Tackling neighbourhood nuisance, anti-social behaviour
>Improving community safety
>Street cleaning, gully emptying
>Environmental awareness raising
>Minor highway works
>Open space and parks maintenance
>Neighbourhood improvements &; alleygating, greenspace, play facilities
>Youth outreach
>Community development
>Local events
>Management of youth centres and community centres.
