A2A (access to records) has been set up by the Public Records Office to help assist research into history. A2A allows you to search and browse for information about archives in England, dating from the 900s to the present day. These archives are cared for in local record offices and libraries, universities, museums and national and specialist institutions across England, where they are made available to the public. To find out whether archives are of interest to you, it is necessary to consult a catalogue or other finding aid. A2A allows you to search across detailed catalogues from over 250 in England beyond the Public Record Office, and to arrange to see or to obtain copies of specific, useful, real archive documents with a few mouse clicks. The database is regularly updated, so revisit often for newly-included catalogues. Archives are records produced by individuals, families or corporate bodies (such as local government organisations, companies or universities) during their activities or business. Archives may be in various formats, including paper files, parchment documents, bound volumes, maps, plans, audio and video recordings and photographs. They may be of any date, from early centuries up to the present day. Archives are retained by their creators, or in record offices and other , because of their abiding interest for researchers - interest which their original creators might never have expected. By Jim McMahon, Editor Smiles all round at the Area Committee when members were told that Manchester Cabins DO NOT have planning permission to store Pallets on the former Siemens site. Enforcement work will start soon to ensure the company either clear the site or apply for planning permission. If it does come to the Committee for approval what will be the answer? With elections in May I can't see any Councillor approving this eye sore!
By Jim McMahon, Editor Work on the proposed Failsworth Health Centre is due to start in early April the Failsworth and Hollinwood Area Committee were told last night. Mr Crichley from the Oldham Primary Care Trust informed us that work had been delayed due to legal and financial issues which needed to be completed before work starts. NOSEY PARKER It was seemed unfortunate that throughout the night Mr Parker, resident of Failsworth, couldn't seem to get over the fact that GPs would be based on the 1st floor and made a big issue of the fact that 'not everyone likes lifts'. Well Mr Parker speaking as someone who has been on the GP waiting list for 18 months, if you do not want to attend the Health Centre due to its lifts then move over - I'll take your place!
By Jim McMahon, Editor Monday 10th March will see two new faces in the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour in Failsworth and Hollinwood. The two new Police Community Support Officers will work together with the Police to kerb such social crimes as anti-social behaviour, abandoned cars and public order offences, including enforcing the drinking ban around Failsworth Pole. Cllr Harrison raised concern about the amount of alcohol being sold to children from other areas, and as those who live in East Failsworth will know only to well. Since off licences in Hollinwood and Limeside are now run mainly by national companies such as Spar and Co-op, it has meant that teenagers are having difficulties in purchasing beer - the knock on effect is that gangs are coming over the Failsworth to take advantage of the morally deprived shop owners, who have no problems with selling beer to kids. The Police approach to this problem is to work closely with Trading Standards to stop these people trading. The wider issue for residents in Failsworth is that teenagers from other areas, once served, hang around for the duration of the night causing trouble and committing crime. If you notice any off licence selling alcohol to kids please report it to either Trading Standards or the Police. Lets hope the new Support Officers help keep Failsworth a safe place to live.
