YOUTH NUISANCE CRACKDOWN

After a series of complaints from residents in Failsworth local councillors worked with Police to tackle youths causing annoyance.

For the last few weeks councillors and police have been gathering evidence of areas where young people were causing problems, and took swift action to highlight the problem to the parents.

The young people we pulled up for causing anti-social behaviour and drinking in the streets were from all over Failsworth and Hollinwood, and those

found with alcohol were taken to a mobile police station (shown in photo) where they were kept until their parents came for them.

Councillor Jim McMahon said "we are investing money into youth provision, but with the carat comes the stick, which is a zero tolerance approach to those choosing to cause disruption and intimidate people".

ROAD SAFETY SCHEMES BEGIN

Work on Stannybrook Road and Medlock Road have both started to ease the problem of speeding motorists. Stannybrook Road (pictured above) and Medlock Road at Bunkers Hill have both seen more than their fair share of accidents, and it is hoped this work will go some way to make the roads safer.

Plans are also in place for traffic schemes on Brierley Avenue and Lord Lane following complaints from local residents.

Councillor Peter Dean told Red Rose “traffic is a major concern for local people and we are well aware it is wider than just these roads. This is why we have asked for monitoring equipment on Westminster Road, Ashton Road East and Wickentree Lane to assess the speed of and volume of vehicles and to come up with solution”.

FAILSWORTH SCHOOL BUILDING WORKS

Local residents have been in touch with councillors to seek to resolve some of the problems related to the building work at Failsworth School.

Councillor Jim McMahon said "we met with residents last Saturday and raised the issues of dirt and dusk from the site at our school governors meeting on the following Monday. Clearly this is not acceptable and we have arranged for a sub group to be set up with with key residents, the school and the contractors to monitor the effect of the work on the local community".

Following the meeting it was agreed that pumps, which were left running over night will now been turned off so that residents peace is not disturbed. We have also asked that an effective wheel wash is used, rather than the current jet wash, to prevent mud being taken onto the road, and eventually onto cars and houses.

If you have any concerns you would like us to take to the contractors just call Jim on 0161 681 6448 or email jim@failsworth.info

Council Press Release: Failsworth Town Centre

The redevelopment of Failsworth Town Centre is gaining pace following a series of key decisions. The development is also receiving high profile interest from Central Government.

Construction of the new store for Tesco is now on site with an estimated completion and store opening in spring 2007. The construction works include all the land as well as landscaping up to the bank of the recently reconstructed Rochdale Canal and will bring the total investment in the Town Centre to over £30 million with still more to come. Development in the few years has also included a new primary health centre and canalside apartments.

The Government Department of Communities and Local Government has a special interest in the success of the scheme, as it is keen to monitor the impact of the regeneration of the Centre not only in terms of other investment but also in the boost to local employment.

Tesco’s commitment to the redevelopment is a vital part of completing the jigsaw at Failsworth not only providing the main shopping experience but also in providing the opportunity to develop small local shop units as well as a new Community Centre for local residents.

Cabinet Member for Environment and Regeneration Councillor Dave Hibbert said: “The people of Failsworth will have a new community centre built in the area and I am delighted that we are now in a position to deliver this important part of the overall regeneration of Failsworth Town Centre. We are still looking at the options for its site as well as talking to other partners that may like to have space in the new centre. Local residents will have opportunities to see the plans as they develop so that their views may be included. We are working closely with the developer to ensure we get the best facility with the money available.”

Ben Brierley's Birthplace - the saga continues

The birthplace of local author Ben Brierley came under the spotlight again after council officers instructed the owners of Prima Pizza to remove the tiles they had fixed to the shop front without planning approval.

Jim McMahon blasted the workmanship by saying "this row has suffered from poor maintenance by its owners for years and they have shown little respect for it being in a conservation area"

Jim went on to say "this latest piece of work has left the grout on the walls and the owners have simply painted over it. It looks a mess and it needs sorting".

Council officers have been asked to inspect the building to insist that the poor workmanship is put right.
