OLDHAM MBC PRESS RELEASE:
Failsworth Litter Program |
A recent two week litter initiative in
Failsworth has proved extremely successful according to Oldham Council.
The initiative gave local people the chance to get more involved in
tackling the litter problems in their area.
Executive Member for Environment and Transportation Councillor Jim
McArdle said over the two weeks many people visited the litter
information caravan and discussed their concerns with officers.
“Many people not only raised concerns but also highlighted streets or
areas where they felt a clean up was needed and suggested how
improvements could be made to the present way of working.
“What was particularly good to see was the interest there was from a
number of people to joining the Litterwatchers scheme. The scheme was
set up to allow local people to help the Council by reporting problems
so swift action could be taken to clear them. While the Council is
committed to doing everything it can to help create a cleaner, greener
environment for everyone, we know that by working with people we will be
able to achieve so much more,” he said.
Over the two weeks various parts of Failsworth were intensively
patrolled by enforcement officers.
A total of 10, £50 fixed penalty notices were issued for littering
offences, all of which were committed by young people between the ages
of 10 and 16. A further three offences are currently being investigated
and with the help of the school it is expected further notices will be
issued.
“If we are to clean up areas and keep them litter free we need the
support of everyone. I am pleased to see staff at Failsworth School have
agreed to work with us to identify the youngsters responsible for
offences and help educate pupils as to the importance of not dropping
litter and having a pride in the local area,” said Councillor McArdle.
Enforcement officers also witnessed eight dog fouling offences, with the
worse areas being Mabel Road playing fields, Daisy Nook Country Park,
Higher Memorial Park and Lord Lane playing fields. Investigations are
continuing and when sufficient evidence is obtained further £50 fixed
penalty notices will be issued in due course.
Several local streets were identified as having flytipped and other
accumulated rubbish in back passageways, gardens and on open land.
Enforcement officers are investigating with a view to taking action
against those responsible.

Three, seven day warning letters requiring rubbish to be cleared from
land have already been issued and one abatement notice which places a
legal obligation on the offender to remove rubbish immediately was
served.
A further 11 identified problem areas were passed directly to the
Council’s Rapid Response Team for them to clear the area.
“Flytipping, litter and dog fouling all create significant problems for
the Council and blight local neighbourhoods. People who continue to
ignore warnings and commit these offences must realise that their
behaviour will not be tolerated.
“Wherever there is sufficient evidence of this type of offence the
Council will take enforcement action against those responsible. Anyone
who fails to pay fixed penalty fines issued will have further legal
proceedings taken against them and could end up facing fines of up to
£2,500 for litter offences and £1,000 for dog fouling,” said Councillor
McArdle.

FAILSWORTH MACEDONIA CC HAVE REASON TO CELEBRATE |
 |
Failsworth
Macedonia cricket club are celebrating the best season in
their history, winning both division 2 & 4 league titles of
the North Manchester cricket league. In addition, both 1st
and 2nd teams won their respective knock out cup
competitions. This represents a unique "double double"
achievement, and the club are hoping to make further strides
on and off the pitch.
As a result of promotion to division 1 , much needed ground
improvements are called for. However, it is a struggle to
find the required finances and fund raising activities keep
the club afloat. |
|
Macedonia have
played on the ground at Holt Lane since 1899, starting out as a
young man's bible class playing cricket against other local
church teams in the area.
Macedonia church own the ground and let the cricket club use the
facilities along with local cubs, scouts, beavers, brownies and
guides. The Failsworth community therefore are involved
sometimes indirectly, and many residents are unaware of the
cricket club's existence. hopefully, this can rectified and the
level of awareness can raised. The club offer several social
events and welcome new members both players and social. Visitors
and spectators are welcome to watch fixtures.
During their history FMCC have been members of the Oldham
Alliance league, Oldham & Ashton league, Denton league, South
Lancashire league, and presently North Manchester league. |

OUTRAGE AT CONTINUED VANDALISM |

TAGGED! Canal works have only just
finished and we haven't even seen the grand opening before the low life
'taggers' move in to ruin the new bridge in Failsworth Centre.
Its not just Failsworth being affected by
this and the problem is alot worse in our neighbouring town of
Chadderton where complete sections of the canal are sprayed with
graffiti. Oldham Council struggles to keep up with the taggers and they
race along the length of the canal making their mark.
Normally riding bikes they are
difficult, if not impossible for police to catch.
This has angered local residents who
have voiced their options below - which this website fully backs.
If you know who these people are let us
know and we'll shame them! |

look at it - they should be ashamed, although I'd bet they couldn't care
less'

'I walk along the canal everyday when I
take the dog out- I hope they can swim!!!'
Mack, Failsworth
'This really lets the canal down, I
agree Chadderton has come off worse but that doesn't mean we are not in
a position to be angry'
Mr B Harris, Failsworth
'Do these kids think this is the the
way to behave? if so give me week with them, they'll soon know the
difference between right and wrong'
John, via Email
'I agree the council are going around
in circles trying to keep up with them, they should be jailed once
caught!'
Clive, via Email
'If there's one thing these morons
dislike, it's being caught. An investment such as this requires
protection. CCTV cameras are an ideal deterrent. They would also make
the walkways safer for the elderly and women. This approach is working
in the City Centre, we should extend it to include Failsworth and
anywhere else the mindless and the sleezeballs operate'

'on ashton road west someone has
written in felt pen RITA now
your not telling me thats a kids name'
